Apprenticeships at Common Thread Community Farm
Together We Can Build A More Vibrant Local Food System
Common Thread Community Farm is expanding this year to a 325 member CSA. We are conveniently located in Madison, New York just a few miles from Colgate University in Hamilton. Common Thread is diversi?ed farm serving the Hamilton, Syracuse, Clinton, and New York City areas with local on-farm pick up as well as delivered shares once a week. We grow over 40 different crops of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and ?owers and over 200 varieties.
The apprenticeship begins April 1 and goes through Oct. 31. Our positions are geared towards individual who may one day wish to manage a farm or perhaps start their own. We do encourage apprentices to stay on for more than one year to expand their understanding of farm operations. Apprenticeship durations may extend longer then October on a case by case basis. Move in dates are flexible.
The apprenticeship includes housing, produce, discounts on value added products sold in the farm shop, and a monthly stipend starting at $750. There is also an option to have an additional $100 towards a health insurance premium. Apprentices who stay on for more than one year can expect an annual raise to their stipend. Some candidates depending on experience may qualify for a larger monthly stipend during their first year.
During the apprenticeship you will learn how the farm works from seed to distribution by taking part in greenhouse seeding, field work including cultivation by hand and machine, harvesting, and packing CSA boxes delivered once a week throughout the season. The apprenticeship entails learning about the CSA model and how it works as a functioning business and a way to grow food for CSA members.
While an apprentice you will receive training on tractors, learn about soil fertility, crop rotations, receive copies of the business plan, budget, crop plan, and other planning materials to help with your education.
